FSV Mainz 05, a prominent Bundesliga club, has announced a significant step forward in its sustainability initiatives by becoming a member of NABU (Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union), focusing on enhancing local climate protection projects. This partnership marks a strategic shift in the club’s investment towards more locally-centered environmental efforts, previously directed at global projects.
Strengthening Local Environmental Impact
The collaboration between Mainz 05 and NABU is designed to strengthen the impact of environmental conservation efforts within the local community. Instead of investing in carbon offset certificates that benefit global southern projects, Mainz 05 will redirect these funds to support the NABU Rheinauen center in Bingen-Gaulsheim. This year alone, the center will receive €23,000 to purchase and restore natural habitats, maintaining biotopes that are crucial for sustainable CO2 sequestration in the region.
Expanding Environmental Education and Awareness
Mainz 05 is not just contributing financially; the club has also pledged an annual membership fee of €1,905 to the NABU local group in Mainz and its surrounding areas. The partnership plans to extend beyond financial support, with initiatives aimed at enhancing environmental education and promoting eco-friendly behaviors among fans. Future projects include creating signage around the MEWA ARENA to educate and sensitize visitors about the value of local biodiversity, not only on match days but also in everyday community life.
Leadership Comments on the Partnership
Bardo Petry, Chairman of the NABU Group Bingen and surrounding areas, emphasized the importance of the club's support: “With the backing of Mainz 05, we can continue to implement and invest in effective local projects that genuinely contribute to climate protection. Our NABU center in Bingen-Gaulsheim serves as a fantastic educational site for children and school groups, and we are thrilled to see Mainz 05 commit to local engagement.”
Christian Henkes, Chairman of the NABU Local Group Mainz, added, “It's great to see that Mainz 05 stands for more than just football. We warmly welcome them as a new member of our group. The areas around the MEWA ARENA have developed into remarkable biotopes over the years, which we plan to highlight through joint signage initiatives.”
Stephan Bandholz, Director of Arena Management and Sustainability at 1. FSV Mainz 05, expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership: “We are pleased to have found a regional and highly competent partner in NABU, which can provide valuable insights into how we can act more efficiently and effectively in terms of climate protection. We look forward to our future cooperation and many joint projects.”
