WhatsApp has launched a series of football-focused features ahead of the World Cup 2026, highlighting how major technology platforms increasingly use global sporting events to drive user engagement, content consumption and adoption of AI-powered services.
The update introduces tournament-themed experiences across messaging, calls, channels and Meta AI, positioning WhatsApp as more than a communication platform during one of the largest global sporting events.
While presented as a fan-focused product update, the move also reflects Meta's broader strategy to capture a larger share of sports-related digital activity during major international competitions.
Football Becomes a Product Layer Inside WhatsApp WhatsApp
Among the new features is a temporary integration of adidas' Trionda match ball into WhatsApp's football emoji experience, alongside new football-themed stickers and video call effects.
The additions are designed to increase interaction within private chats and group conversations, where football discussions already generate significant activity during major tournaments.
Channels Become a Distribution Hub for Football Content
A more strategically significant development is the expansion of football content within WhatsApp Channels. The platform has introduced a dedicated football section that aggregates team updates, match information and tournament-related content in a single environment.
The update further strengthens Channels as Meta's answer to broadcast-style content distribution inside WhatsApp, creating additional opportunities for sports organisations, federations, leagues and media companies to reach audiences directly.
The company has also introduced Channel Status updates, allowing channels to publish short-form content that appears alongside traditional WhatsApp Status posts. The feature brings WhatsApp closer to social media content formats already familiar to users of Instagram and other Meta-owned platforms.
Meta AI Enters the Football Experience
Another notable addition is the integration of Meta AI, powered by Muse Spark technology, into the tournament experience. Users will be able to access information related to fixtures, players and tournament developments directly through AI-powered interactions. The service can also provide recommendations such as nearby locations to watch matches.
According to WhatsApp, the objective of the new features is to make following the tournament more interactive and social, while preserving the platform's core privacy positioning.
The company reiterated that personal messages and calls remain protected through end-to-end encryption, ensuring that football-related conversations remain private despite the introduction of new content and AI features.
