In a move that underlines the shifting landscape of women’s football ownership, Ballard Capital — led by Kansas City Current owners Angie and Chris Long — has completed the acquisition of HB Køge Women, a top-tier Danish club competing in the Kvindeliga, Denmark’s highest division of women’s football.
Structural Complexity: Deal Required Team Separation
HB Køge previously operated as a combined men’s and women’s football entity under Capelli Sport ownership. For the acquisition to proceed, the Longs worked with Capelli Sport to legally separate the women’s side from the rest of the club — allowing Ballard Capital to acquire it as an independent asset. This kind of structural uncoupling remains rare in European football and required both legal and operational alignment. The men’s team remains under separate ownership.
Ownership Thesis: Infrastructure, Not Image Kansas City Current HB Køge
The acquisition follows the Longs’ previously documented investment model through the Kansas City Current — where they have funded a purpose-built training center and soon-to-be-opened stadium for women’s football. The intent with HB Køge Women appears consistent: invest in infrastructure, build competitive foundations, and raise long-term asset value.
According to their public statement:
“We’re bringing a proven model to a new market. The Danish league is competitive, and HB Køge has demonstrated it can win. Our focus is on strengthening that base and building a top-tier youth academy in Scandinavia.”
The plan includes a Scandinavia-wide youth talent platform, focused on both football performance and content activation — in line with broader trends in women’s football IP development.
HB Køge Women’s Recent Competitive Record
Founded in 2009 through the merger of Køge Boldklub and Herfølge Boldklub, HB Køge Women has been among the most consistent performers in Danish football in recent years:
Kvindeliga Champions in 2021, 2022, and 2023
UEFA Women’s Champions League participant in all three seasons
Competing approximately 30 minutes south of Copenhagen
This is not a turnaround case. The club is already performing on the pitch and has brand potential in a growing European ecosystem for women’s football.
Capelli Sport Retains Kit Rights
Although Capelli Sport is no longer the owner, it remains commercially involved. The company will continue to serve as the kit and athleticwear partner of HB Køge Women — a deal that aligns with the brand’s broader positioning in niche and emerging football markets.
The Longs acknowledged the transition with clear appreciation:
“We are incredibly appreciative to George Altirs and Capelli Sport for their investment and for making this acquisition possible. We see continuity in key relationships as a strategic advantage.”
