Southampton F.C. has completed the installation of more than 450 solar panels at its Staplewood Training Campus, marking a key milestone in the club’s long-term sustainability strategy, The Halo Effect.

The project, delivered in partnership with official sustainability partner Utilita Energy, was first announced in October 2025, formally switched on in January 2026, and confirmed as fully installed on February 17.

In total, 452 solar panels have been fitted across the Pavilion and Gym roofs at the training ground. The system is expected to generate approximately 20% of the Pavilion’s electricity demand through renewable energy and reduce annual carbon emissions by around 33,000 kilograms of CO₂.

The installation forms part of Southampton’s broader environmental roadmap under The Halo Effect, which integrates operational decarbonisation with long-term cost efficiency.

According to the club’s projections, the solar array will:

  • reduce reliance on grid electricity

  • help manage exposure to volatile energy markets

  • generate estimated long-term savings of approximately £0.6 million over 20 years

The project reflects a growing trend among English professional clubs investing in on-site renewable generation to stabilise operational costs and strengthen ESG positioning.

Switch-On Event and Stakeholder Participation

The official switch-on event, held in January, brought together first-team and academy players, club executives, project staff, and representatives from Southampton City Council. The event underscored the alignment between sporting infrastructure and environmental responsibility.

Executive Comments

Greg Baker, Chief Revenue Officer at Southampton FC, said:

“This is a great moment for the club. What began as a sustainability commitment has now become a visible, working renewable energy solution that will benefit Southampton FC for years to come. This project shows how football can drive meaningful environmental change.”

Bill Bullen, Chief Executive Officer of Utilita Energy, added:

“This partnership demonstrates how organisations can turn ambition into action. Today’s switch-on is not just symbolic. It’s practical, measurable progress towards a cleaner energy future.”
