Palermo FC has formally submitted documentation to the Sicilian Region as part of the administrative process linked to the redevelopment of the Stadio Renzo Barbera, moving forward with a project that the club sees as central to its long-term sporting and urban ambitions.
Developed together with architecture firm Populous, the proposal goes beyond a traditional stadium renovation. Palermo is positioning the project as a large-scale urban infrastructure initiative tied to regeneration, sustainability and the city’s international positioning ahead of UEFA EURO 2032.
A Stadium Project Designed Around Urban Integration Palermo FC
One of the central ideas behind the project is the removal of the separation between stadium and city. Palermo’s proposal focuses on transforming the Barbera into a year-round destination integrated into the surrounding urban environment rather than a venue active only on matchdays.
The club plans to introduce new public and social spaces around the stadium, alongside hospitality, entertainment and community-focused areas designed to increase daily usage of the site.
The project includes a significant redesign of the spectator experience. Planned upgrades include:
• full roof coverage
• stands positioned closer to the pitch
• expanded food and beverage areas
• improved accessibility
• new premium and hospitality environments
UEFA EURO 2032 and International Positioning
The redevelopment is closely connected to Palermo’s ambition to remain part of Italy’s UEFA EURO 2032 plans. The club described the future Barbera as infrastructure capable of hosting not only Serie A football, but also UEFA competitions, concerts and international events.
The project therefore carries importance beyond the club itself. Palermo is framing the stadium as a strategic asset for the city, linked to tourism, international visibility and broader economic development.
Sustainability and Infrastructure Modernisation
Environmental sustainability forms a major part of the proposal. Palermo outlined plans for:
• photovoltaic energy systems
• rainwater recovery and reuse
• reduced energy consumption
• electric mobility infrastructure
• bicycle and pedestrian integration
• permeable parking surfaces with tree-lined areas
The project aims to move the stadium progressively toward energy self-sufficiency while reducing the environmental impact of large-scale event operations.
New Headquarters and Commercial Infrastructure
Alongside the stadium redevelopment, Palermo also plans to construct a new headquarters complex adjacent to the venue. The structure is expected to include offices, fan areas, premium hospitality spaces and a club museum.
This addition expands the commercial scope of the project, creating infrastructure capable of supporting both operational and experiential revenue streams.
