VfL Wolfsburg has unveiled a new club identity centred around the return of its historic battlement crest, officially bringing one of the club’s most recognisable symbols back into its branding strategy.

The announcement arrives at a sensitive sporting moment for Wolfsburg, with the club still fighting to avoid relegation from the Bundesliga. That context gives the move additional significance, positioning the crest not only as a design decision, but also as a symbolic return to identity and regional roots during a period of uncertainty.

A Brand Identity Built Around Heritage and Regional Connection VfL Wolfsburg

The club highlights that for many supporters, the battlement crest never truly disappeared. While absent from official branding in recent years, it remained strongly embedded within fan culture and stadium symbolism. Wolfsburg has now decided to formally reconnect the club’s future image with that legacy.

The updated crest combines traditional elements with a more modern visual structure, linking the club’s industrial and regional history with its current positioning.

According to Wolfsburg, the process behind the redesign involved months of consultation with supporters, club leadership, the supervisory board, the city and external stakeholders. The club framed the project as a collaborative effort focused on strengthening identification between the team, the region and the wider Wolfsburg community.

The battlement crest also carries a strong connection to the city itself and the club’s historical relationship with Volkswagen, one of the defining corporate identities in German football.

Gradual Rollout Across Club Operations

The transition to the new identity will happen progressively rather than immediately. Wolfsburg confirmed that the current logo will remain on playing kits until at least the 2027/28 season, while the historic crest is introduced step by step across communications, environments and club assets.

This phased approach allows the club to manage merchandise cycles, sponsorship integration and existing commercial inventory without creating operational disruption.
