A takeover agreement has been reached for Morecambe FC, as current owners Bond Group and prospective buyers Panjab Warriors confirmed a deal intended to secure the future of the financially troubled National League club, as reported by the BBC.
The development follows months of uncertainty during which Morecambe were suspended from the league and had their opening three fixtures postponed over concerns regarding their ability to meet financial obligations. The Panjab Warriors takeover had previously received EFL approval in June after the club’s relegation from League Two, but the transaction stalled amid a series of setbacks and public pressure from political leaders.
Joint Statement from Both Parties Morecambe FC Panjab Warriors
In a joint announcement, Bond Group, led by owner Jason Whittingham, and Panjab Warriors described the agreement as a “compromise in the best interests of Morecambe FC, its supporters, and the wider community.”
“It paves the way for continued stability and a positive future both on and off the pitch. Final legal documentation will now be prepared, with immediate steps being taken to inform key stakeholders, including the National League and the club’s management team,” the statement read.
The parties also expressed appreciation to those involved for their patience during the process and said they were looking forward to “a new chapter in the club’s history.”
Next Steps and Stakeholder Involvement
The Shrimps Trust supporters’ group confirmed that sale and purchase agreements are now being drafted for submission to the National League. While urging caution until official approvals are in place, the group said all parties had verified the progress, giving “some assurance that a resolution is in sight.”
This latest announcement comes after mediation sessions between the two sides earlier in the week. A previous attempt to finalise the deal in early July collapsed despite Whittingham announcing agreed terms.
Background and Context
Panjab Warriors have been pursuing ownership of Morecambe for over a year, at one stage partnering with businessman Jonny Cato in a separate bid. The club’s operations were shut down in late July, shortly after suspension from the National League.
In recent weeks, the situation had drawn national attention. UK Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy urged Whittingham to complete the sale, while Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer called on all parties “to do the right thing.”
