Inter Miami CF has confirmed that Lionel Messi has signed a contract extension through 2028, securing the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner’s presence in Major League Soccer for at least three more seasons. The Argentine captain, who joined the club in July 2023, was previously under contract until the end of the 2025 campaign.

Strategic Continuity for Inter Miami

The extension solidifies Messi’s central role in Inter Miami’s sporting and commercial strategy, coinciding with the anticipated opening of Miami Freedom Park Stadium in 2026. The club’s ownership group, led by Jorge Mas and David Beckham, has positioned Messi as the cornerstone of Inter Miami’s long-term growth, both on the pitch and as a global marketing asset.

Since his arrival, Messi has helped drive unprecedented attention to MLS and Inter Miami, leading the club to its first two titles — the Leagues Cup 2023 and the Supporters’ Shield 2024 — while setting new benchmarks for attendance, merchandise sales, and international exposure.

Performance and Milestones

In the 2025 regular season, Messi recorded 29 goals and 19 assists, earning the MLS Golden Boot presented by Audi and narrowly missing the all-time single-season record for goal contributions. Inter Miami finished third in the Eastern Conference with 65 points, entering the Audi 2025 MLS Cup Playoffs as one of the top contenders.

Across all competitions, Messi has registered 71 goals and 44 assists in 82 appearances for the club, continuing to deliver performances that sustain MLS’s global visibility.

Broader Impact on MLS

Messi’s presence in Major League Soccer has transformed the league’s international profile, drawing comparisons to David Beckham’s move to LA Galaxy in 2007. His transfer helped accelerate the league’s global media footprint and played a key role in MLS’s commercial partnerships, including the Apple TV and Adidas global agreements.

MLS Commissioner Don Garber called Messi’s contract extension a defining moment for the league:

“When Lionel Messi made MLS his league of choice, it marked a turning point not just for Inter Miami, but for the sport in North America. His continued commitment reinforces that impact.”

Inter Miami’s Ownership Perspective

Club co-owner Jorge Mas described the renewal as part of a larger project to establish Inter Miami as one of the most recognized clubs globally:

“Leo signing through 2028 is an ode to our city and our fans. Together we’ll continue to build a club that represents the passion and ambition of Miami.”

David Beckham emphasized the long-term vision behind Messi’s role in the project:

“Bringing Lionel to Miami reflects our commitment to growing the club and the game in the U.S. His influence extends far beyond the pitch, inspiring the next generation of players.”

Looking Ahead

Messi’s extended stay aligns with a pivotal period for football in North America, as the region prepares to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Argentine forward is expected to feature both as Inter Miami’s captain and as a potential leader of Argentina’s title defense at the tournament.

With the 2028 contract extension, Messi is also set to become part of Inter Miami’s inaugural seasons at Miami Freedom Park, positioning the club to capitalize on increased global attention and continued commercial growth.
