Giorgio Chiellini, one of the most iconic defenders in modern football, has taken the next step in his career by joining the ownership group of Major League Soccer’s LAFC. The announcement was made on Tuesday, July 8, marking a significant milestone for the Black & Gold franchise as it brings a legendary football mind into its strategic leadership.
Chiellini’s involvement, now formalized after his post-retirement coaching role, reflects LAFC’s continued commitment to integrating football intelligence and legacy into its ownership model.
From Player to Partner Giorgio Chiellini LAFC
Chiellini retired from professional football in December 2023 after a 22-year career, including his final two seasons as a player at LAFC. During that time, he helped guide the team to multiple trophies, including the 2022 MLS Cup and Supporters’ Shield. Since then, he remained close to the club as a Player Development Coach throughout the 2024 season.
Now, the former Juventus captain and European champion with Italy returns to the organization in a long-term strategic role as a minority owner.
“Joining the LAFC ownership group is a great honor for me,” said Chiellini in the official announcement. “This club is built by extraordinary people and supported by a community that makes you feel at home. I’m proud to continue this journey and give my support to a project I deeply believe in.”
LAFC’s Broader Strategy
Chiellini's move into ownership reflects LAFC’s broader ambition to build a club that fuses on-field success with strategic brand development and international credibility.
As Lead Managing Owner Bennett Rosenthal explained:
“Giorgio’s leadership and values align with our long-term vision. His presence strengthens our organization on every level.”
The club, founded in 2014, has rapidly established itself as a commercially and competitively successful MLS franchise. With a global fanbase, modern stadium infrastructure, and high-profile investors, LAFC continues to raise the bar in American football.
Commercial & Cultural Impact
Giorgio's global reputation, especially in Europe, strengthens LAFC’s international profile at a time when MLS is aggressively expanding its footprint through star players, global partnerships, and increased media rights.
The addition of Chiellini also signals a deeper commitment to football culture and leadership at LAFC—something that resonates both with supporters and commercial partners.
Chiellini is expected to play a role in bridging European and American football ecosystems, potentially aiding LAFC in strategic partnerships, scouting, and global branding initiatives.
Chiellini’s Legacy
Chiellini’s credentials speak for themselves:
• 117 caps for Italy, including captaining the team to victory in UEFA Euro 2020
• Nine consecutive Serie A titles with Juventus
• Named Serie A Defender of the Year three times
• Recognized for his leadership and sportsmanship globally
At LAFC, he made 45 appearances across all competitions and contributed significantly to the club’s golden era between 2022 and 2023, helping to secure the 2022 MLS Cup and reaching three major finals in 2023.
