First Phase of Redevelopment Process Begins

Como 1907, in collaboration with the Municipality of Como and architectural firm Populous, has announced the initial stage of the redevelopment of Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia. The first step in the process involves the submission and approval of the Document of Feasibility of Project Alternatives (DOCFAP), which will lay the groundwork for the stadium’s transformation.

The anticipated timeline for the project is as follows:

  • Design and Approval Process: May 2026

  • Construction Phase I: October 2027

  • Construction Phase II: August 2028

Como 1907 and the Municipality have emphasized their commitment to transparency and public engagement, ensuring that fans and local residents are involved throughout the process. The redevelopment aims to preserve the historical significance of the stadium while transforming it into a modern and multifunctional venue.

A Community-Oriented Vision Como 1907 Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia

While early renderings were presented during the announcement, Como 1907 clarified that these are concept images and may not reflect the final design. The final version will be revealed following the completion of the feasibility phase.

Mirwan Suwarso, President of Como 1907, highlighted the project’s community-first approach:

“Our aim is to ensure Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia remains a vital part of the community. The new project must honor the Giuseppe Sinigaglia stadium legacy while making it an active and accessible space for all citizens and visitors—not just for football, but for everyone to enjoy, 365 days a year.”

Alessandro Rapinese, Mayor of Como, underlined the stadium’s broader significance beyond football:

“This is the first phase of the process. This stadium is not just for football, but a gift for the entire community. I look forward to the various phases and to being able to enjoy Como 1907 play inside the new G. Sinigaglia.”

Architectural Approach and Integration with the City

The redevelopment will be led by Populous, a firm known for designing major sports venues worldwide. Silvia Prandelli, General Manager of Populous Italia, shared the firm’s vision for the project:

“We are privileged to be involved in the redesign of the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia. We look forward to working with Como 1907 and the Municipality of Como to bring the vision to life for the redevelopment of the stadium and how it will integrate with the local community.”

Balancing Tradition with Modernization

The Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia, originally built in 1927, is one of Italy’s historic football venues, located along the scenic shores of Lake Como. The redevelopment aims to modernize facilities while respecting the stadium’s heritage, ensuring it remains a functional space beyond matchday.

With football clubs increasingly investing in stadium redevelopments to enhance both fan experience and commercial opportunities, Como 1907’s project follows a growing trend among clubs looking to maximize stadium usability and long-term sustainability. As the project moves forward, further details on the final design, funding model, and additional community initiatives are expected to be revealed.
