Birmingham City Chairman Tom Wagner has announced that Heatherwick Studio and MANICA Architecture will lead the design of the club’s new stadium, part of the wider Sports Quarter development project.
The announcement was made at the Regional Investment Summit in Edgbaston, where Wagner spoke alongside UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves, confirming the creative partnership that will shape Birmingham City’s next-generation home.
International and Local Collaboration
The project brings together Heatherwick Studio, a multi-award-winning British design firm known for its work on London’s Coal Drops Yard and New York’s Little Island, and MANICA, a Kansas-based global sports architecture practice responsible for major venues such as Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas and Chase Center in San Francisco.
The two firms will collaborate closely with Steven Knight, the Birmingham-born screenwriter and director of Peaky Blinders, who joins the team as a cultural consultant and lifelong supporter of the club.
Together, the group will oversee the creation of a new stadium described as “truly extraordinary, recognisable around the globe, yet rooted in the history of Birmingham.”
Vision for the Sports Quarter Birmingham City Heatherwick Studio
The stadium will serve as the centerpiece of Birmingham City’s planned Sports Quarter, a major regeneration project aimed at revitalising part of the city through sport, culture, and community infrastructure.
The design is expected to balance global architectural ambition with local identity, creating a venue that not only hosts football but also acts as a year-round destination for events, entertainment, and business activity.
Next Steps
Further information — including concept designs and visuals — will be released in the coming weeks. The project forms a core part of Tom Wagner’s broader investment strategy for Birmingham City since his acquisition of the club, reflecting his commitment to building a modern, sustainable, and community-focused stadium.
