Arsenal has released a new short film directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Spike Lee, marking the first collaboration between the club and the director. The project, titled Who Are Ya?, forms part of the club’s commercial activation strategy with global fintech partner Airwallex and reflects a broader shift toward narrative-driven brand integration in football.

A Creative Format Reflecting the Modern Football Audience Arsenal FC

The film is built around a familiar setting — a pub discussion — but introduces an unexpected twist. Instead of focusing on tactics or players, the dialogue shifts toward financial terminology, reflecting how modern supporters increasingly engage with the business side of football.

The production features a mix of current players, former legends and cultural figures, including Thierry Henry, alongside actors and supporters. The result is a format that blends entertainment, authenticity and commercial messaging without relying on overt branding.

Spike Lee’s signature visual techniques, including his well-known “double dolly” shot, add a cinematic layer that distinguishes the project from standard club-produced content.

Executive Comments

Spike Lee emphasised the cultural dimension of the project, speaking via Arsenal’s official website:

“Fans today don’t just follow the game, they understand everything around it too… this film is about that voice, that culture, and that community.”

Matt Jennings, Global Creative Director at Airwallex, highlighted the strategic intent behind the activation, also speaking via Arsenal’s official website:

“We didn’t want to be a random logo… we decided to introduce our Arsenal partnership in a way supporters couldn’t ignore.”

Arsenal’s Chief Commercial Officer Juliet Slot positioned the project within the club’s broader partnership approach, stating via Arsenal’s official website:

“Our partnerships are at their best when… we lift our supporters and bring them closer to us.”
