Dundee United has confirmed a Cooperation Agreement with Airdrieonians, a Scottish Championship club, as part of the new youth development framework recommended by the Scottish FA’s Transition Report and approved by SPFL clubs for the 2025/26 season.

The initiative allows players aged 16 to 21 – considered to be in the key “transition phase” – to move between a parent club and a lower-league side throughout the season. The system is designed to provide more opportunities for competitive first-team football, while still maintaining links to academy and B-team structures.
Under the new rules, Premiership clubs may enter agreements with one team per tier in the Scottish football pyramid. Dundee United’s Under-19s will continue competing in the Club Academy Scotland top flight, and the B team will remain in the KDM Evolution Trophy.
Club Perspective
Luigi Capuano, Dundee United Chief Executive, described the agreement as a significant step in building clearer development pathways:
“Creating the best pathway for our young players is of paramount importance, and this agreement represents a terrific opportunity for them to gain regular first-team action. Our values align with Airdrieonians, who have consistently trusted the next generation of Scottish players.”
Scott Allison, Academy Director, noted that the Championship was a logical level for this first agreement:
“We felt it was imperative that the first one in place was with a side in the Championship. Giving young players the chance to play just one level below the Premiership provides the best challenge for them. This is the natural next step for Academy graduates who have already gained experience in the third tier.”
The cooperation reflects a broader effort within Scottish football to bridge the gap between academy football and senior professional competition. By offering structured playing time in the Championship, Dundee United and Airdrieonians aim to accelerate the development of young talent and strengthen the pipeline of players moving into the Premiership.
