Atlético de Madrid has appointed former Spain international David Villa to its Board of Directors, marking the striker’s return to the club in an executive capacity. The announcement was made during the formation of the club’s new board at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, where Enrique Cerezo will continue serving as president and Miguel Ángel Gil will remain chief executive.

Former Atlético Player Returns in Governance Role

David Villa previously played for Atlético de Madrid during the 2013/14 season, contributing to the club’s LaLiga title-winning campaign and helping the team reach the UEFA Champions League final in the same year. His new role within the club’s governing body represents a shift from sporting involvement to executive oversight, placing him among the eleven members responsible for the club’s strategic direction and institutional governance.

Villa remains one of the most recognisable figures in Spanish football, having finished his international career as the all-time leading goalscorer for the Spanish national team.

Executive Comments David Villa

David Villa said he views the role as an opportunity to contribute to the club’s continued development:

“I’m very happy to return to the club with new responsibilities but the same desire to help Atlético de Madrid continue growing season after season.”

Club president Enrique Cerezo welcomed Villa back to the organisation:

“This has always been your home. We are delighted that you have accepted this challenge and I am convinced your experience will help make Atlético de Madrid even stronger.”
