1.FC Union Berlin has marked a key construction milestone in the development of its new training centre at Alte Försterei, a €40 million infrastructure project designed to house both the club’s men’s and women’s professional teams under a single structure.

The facility is scheduled for completion later this year.

Integrated Infrastructure Across Both Professional Teams 1. FC Union Berlin

The new training centre spans approximately 4,100 square metres across three floors and has been designed to accommodate both squads within a shared environment. The concept is based on equal access to facilities, with identical working conditions for men’s and women’s teams.

The complex will include modern locker rooms, recovery areas such as ice baths and saunas, physiotherapy and fitness spaces, as well as offices and meeting rooms. Training operations will be supported by four pitches, including two full-size fields.

A notable feature of the project is the construction of a natural grass pitch built on top of a parking structure, combining spatial efficiency with performance requirements.

Infrastructure as a Competitive Asset

By centralising operations and aligning working conditions across teams, the club is investing in long-term performance outcomes, talent development and organisational efficiency.

The decision to integrate men’s and women’s teams within the same facility also signals a structural commitment to the growth of the women’s game at club level.

Executive Comment

Club president Dirk Zingler underlined the significance of the project, speaking via Union Berlin’s official communication:

“We are investing around €40 million… creating something new in German professional football: both of our professional teams will work under the same conditions, under one roof and on the same training pitches.”

He also linked the development directly to competitive ambitions:

“Our goal will always be to have both teams competing in the top division… this becomes more achievable as we continue to improve the conditions.”
