In a significant development for European football governance, Miguel Ángel Gil Marín, the CEO of Atlético de Madrid, has been appointed as a member of the UEFA Executive Committee. This appointment took place at the 48th Ordinary Congress of UEFA, held on February 8, 2024, at the Maison de la Mutualité in Paris, marking a milestone in Gil Marín's illustrious career in football administration.

Miguel Ángel Gil Marín has been a central figure in football, not just within the realms of Atlético de Madrid but also in the broader football community. Since joining Atlético de Madrid in 1993 as the general manager and later becoming the CEO in February 2002, Gil Marín has been instrumental in the club's growth and success. Over the past two decades, he has also been the majority shareholder of the club, demonstrating his commitment and leadership.

Beyond his roles at Atlético de Madrid, Gil Marín has held several significant positions in football governance. He is the first vice-president of LaLiga and has been a member of the board of the European Club Association (ECA), where he stands as the only Spaniard alongside Jokin Aperribay. His appointment to the executive committee of ECA further solidifies his standing in European football's administrative circles.

The UEFA Executive Committee, chaired by Aleksander Čeferin, is the pinnacle of decision-making within European football's governing body. Comprising 20 members, including the UEFA president, the committee oversees critical decisions affecting the sport across the continent. Gil Marín steps into the role previously held by Karl Heinz Rummenige and will serve a four-year term, bringing his extensive experience and insights to the committee.

Upon his appointment, Gil Marín expressed his honor and eagerness to contribute to European football, stating, "I am very pleased, and it is an honour for me to be appointed to the UEFA Executive Committee for the very first time." He looks forward to collaborating with ECA Chairman Nasser Al-Khelaïfi and UEFA to represent the clubs effectively and work towards the betterment of European football as a whole.

Gil Marín's appointment to the UEFA Executive Committee is a testament to his dedication and impact on football administration. His role in Atlético de Madrid's ascendancy in European football, coupled with his leadership positions in LaLiga and the ECA, positions him as a valuable addition to UEFA's executive body. As European football continues to evolve, stakeholders will watch closely how Gil Marín's contributions shape the future of the sport on the continent.
