When Thibaut Courtois returned to KRC Genk as an investor through NXTPLAY earlier this summer, the story was immediately recognised as one of the most symbolic moments in Belgian football.

Several weeks later, KRC Genk has published the communication impact of that announcement—and the figures demonstrate how a strategically told story can create value far beyond the investment itself.

According to the club, Courtois' return generated an estimated €1.138 million in combined media value across traditional media, social media and the club's owned channels.

Traditional Media Delivered the Largest Reach KRC Genk

KRC Genk estimates that traditional media coverage alone generated approximately €740,000 in media value.

The announcement resulted in:

  • 118 media articles

  • More than 42 million people reached

The figures underline the continued importance of earned media for football clubs, particularly when announcements combine sporting relevance with a compelling narrative.

Social Media Amplified the Story

Beyond traditional media, the announcement also generated significant engagement across social platforms.

According to KRC Genk's figures, the story produced:

  • Estimated media value of €325,000

  • 112 relevant social media posts

  • Approximately 2.3 million interactions

Rather than relying solely on the club's own channels, the announcement spread organically across football media, creators and supporter communities, extending its reach internationally.

Strong Performance Across Club-Owned Channels

The club also reported substantial engagement through its own digital platforms.

Owned media generated an estimated value of approximately €73,000, alongside:

  • 9.4 million views

  • 21,000 new followers

  • 521,000 engagements

Those numbers demonstrate how major announcements can accelerate audience growth while strengthening direct relationships with supporters.

The club described the story as one of a world-class player returning to the club where his career began, emphasising that the emotional connection proved more powerful than the transaction itself.

According to Genk, the announcement reinforces the club's long-standing identity as a place where talent is developed before reaching the highest levels of European football.
