Mumbai City FC has confirmed a change in its ownership structure following the decision by City Football Group to divest its shareholding in the club. Full control of Mumbai City FC will now return to the club’s founding owners, ending CFG’s involvement that began in 2019.

The decision marks a notable adjustment within CFG’s global portfolio and comes amid continued uncertainty surrounding the long-term structure and commercial outlook of the Indian Super League (ISL).

CFG’s Portfolio Reassessment Mumbai City FC

According to the club, CFG’s exit followed a comprehensive commercial review, with the group citing the lack of long-term clarity around the ISL as a central factor. The move reflects a portfolio management approach in which CFG evaluates each market based on competitive stability, governance predictability and long-term return potential.

CFG stated that it will continue to maintain relationships and partnerships in India, but will no longer hold an equity position in Mumbai City FC.

Sporting and Operational Record Under CFG

During CFG’s ownership period, Mumbai City FC achieved multiple domestic milestones, including two ISL League Winners’ Shields and two ISL Cup titles. The period also saw investment in football operations, coaching infrastructure and professionalisation aligned with CFG’s broader operating standards.

From a performance standpoint, Mumbai City FC became one of the most consistently competitive teams in the ISL during CFG’s tenure.

Return to Founder Control

With CFG’s exit, governance and strategic control reverts entirely to the club’s founding ownership group. No changes to day-to-day football operations or competitive participation have been announced as part of the transition.

The club has not disclosed whether new external investors will be sought or whether the ownership structure will remain fully domestic in the medium term.
