Borussia Dortmund has become the first football club to launch a dedicated football mode in Fortnite, expanding its digital strategy into one of the world's largest gaming platforms.

The new experience, titled "Bolzplatz-Liebe" ("Street Football Love"), launches on 3 July and gives players permanent access to a 2v2 football mode inspired by one of the club's most iconic locations.

The initiative follows Borussia Dortmund's recent Roblox activation and reflects a broader strategy of using gaming platforms to engage younger audiences while creating new commercial opportunities for partners and sponsors.

Gaming Continues to Reshape Fan Engagement Borussia Dortmund

Football clubs are increasingly treating gaming platforms as strategic fan engagement channels rather than promotional campaigns. For Borussia Dortmund, Fortnite represents another step in reaching Gen Z and Gen Alpha audiences, who spend a growing share of their leisure time inside gaming ecosystems.

Unlike traditional social media, gaming platforms allow clubs to create persistent digital environments where supporters actively participate rather than simply consume content. The "Bolzplatz-Liebe" experience will remain permanently available and will continue to evolve through new content, live events and community-driven updates.

Bringing Dortmund's Football Culture Into Fortnite

The virtual experience is centred around Max-Michallek-Platz, a real football pitch located just metres from Borsigplatz, widely regarded as the birthplace of Borussia Dortmund. Rather than recreating Signal Iduna Park, the club chose a location that reflects its grassroots identity and local football culture.

The project was developed together with gaming studio DayZero and features a fast-paced 2v2 football mode designed specifically for Fortnite. According to Borussia Dortmund, future updates will be shaped by player feedback, allowing the experience to develop over time rather than remaining a one-off activation.

Executive Comments

Alexander Mühl, Borussia Dortmund's Director of Marketing & Digitalization, said the project reflects the club's ambition to connect supporters across both physical and digital environments.

"Football brings people together – on the street pitch just as much as in the virtual world. With 'Bolzplatz-Liebe', we create exactly that connection."

DayZero CEO Tobias Egartner said gaming platforms have become one of the most important touchpoints for younger audiences and offer football clubs new opportunities to build communities beyond traditional media.
