Paul Barber, deputy chairman and chief executive of Brighton & Hove Albion, has joined the board of Melbourne Victory as a non-executive director. The move follows chairman Tony Bloom’s investment in the Australian A-League club earlier this year.

Role and Responsibilities Paul Barber Melbourne Victory

Paul Barber will represent Bloom’s shareholding on the board of Melbourne Victory while maintaining his primary responsibilities at Brighton. He has been working with Caroline Carnegie, Melbourne Victory’s managing director, to develop a knowledge-sharing partnership designed to create mutual benefits across sporting and administrative areas of both clubs.

Paul Barber emphasised that Brighton remains his day-to-day focus but highlighted the potential for cooperation:

“This is an opportunity for both clubs to explore opportunities of how we can work together to achieve our own individual ambitions on and off the pitch. My day-to-day priority will always be Brighton & Hove Albion, but this is an opportunity for us to share best practice in multiple sporting and administrative departments across the two clubs — while also representing Tony’s interests at Melbourne Victory.”

Strategic Significance

The appointment strengthens the relationship between Brighton and Melbourne Victory, aligning with Bloom’s strategy to broaden his international football portfolio. The knowledge-sharing model is expected to provide operational synergies, including commercial strategy, player development, and fan engagement practices.

Industry Context

Barber’s new role makes him the first British football executive to hold board-level positions in the Premier League, EFL Championship, MLS, USL, and Australia’s A-League. His experience also includes senior roles with The FA and England’s national teams at UEFA European Championships and FIFA World Cups.
