Football

When Curaçao and Cabo Verde qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the immediate story was football.

The tournament has since produced another outcome—one that extends beyond the pitch and into tourism, nation branding and international visibility.

According to Google Trends, both countries reached the highest global search interest levels ever recorded during the competition. Not the highest this year or this decade, but the highest since Google began tracking search behaviour.

Record-Breaking Global Search Interest Football

The increase in attention was not limited to Google Trends.

On the day of Curaçao's World Cup debut, the country's English-language Wikipedia page recorded approximately 1.22 million views. During the first ten days of June, it averaged around 20,500 daily views, representing a 59-fold increase.

Cabo Verde experienced an even larger jump.

Following its opening match against Spain, the country's Wikipedia page attracted approximately 1.23 million views in a single day, compared with an average of roughly 10,800 daily views earlier in the month—a 114-fold increase.

Taken together, the figures point to a level of international attention that both countries had never previously experienced online.

From Football Match to Destination Discovery

The data suggests that viewers were not simply searching for match results.

They were searching for the countries themselves.

Questions such as:

  • Where is Curaçao?

  • Where is Cabo Verde?

  • What are these countries like?

  • Could they be worth visiting?

appear to have driven a broader wave of online discovery following each team's World Cup debut.

The tournament effectively became a gateway to learning about places that many international viewers had previously known little about.

Tourism Searches Also Increased

The trend extended beyond general information.

Google Trends also recorded a sharp increase in searches related to "Curaçao hotels" and "Cape Verde hotels" during the tournament period.

In Curaçao's case, search interest for "Curaçao hotels" reached the highest level ever recorded.

Search data alone does not translate directly into hotel bookings or visitor arrivals.

However, it provides one of the earliest indicators of travel intent and destination awareness—two metrics closely monitored by tourism organisations.

Football as a Nation-Branding Platform

For governments and tourism boards, attracting international attention is often the starting point of destination marketing. The World Cup demonstrates that football can generate that attention in a way traditional campaigns rarely can.

Unlike conventional advertising, football introduces countries through competition, emotion and storytelling rather than promotional messaging.

Viewers first connect with a national team.

Curiosity about the country frequently follows.

For smaller nations with limited global visibility, that sequence can create opportunities extending beyond sport itself.

Why It Matters

The commercial significance of international football is often measured through broadcasting, sponsorship and ticket sales.

The data from Curaçao and Cabo Verde highlights another dimension. Global tournaments can also function as nation-branding platforms capable of generating unprecedented international awareness within a matter of days.

For countries seeking to strengthen tourism, investment and global recognition, that visibility has value well beyond the final whistle. The World Cup did not simply introduce two national teams to a global audience.

It introduced two countries.
